SUSTAINABLE TOURISM ON VASHON

Every year Vashon-Maury Island plays host to a myriad of local events designed to inspire and reflect our unique culture.  We celebrate for many reasons: the low tides of the year, the growth of the crop of lavender, the completion of an art collection.  The recent addition of the "Evening in …Series" presents the chance for islanders to share their global perspectives.

STOV is determined to maintain, nurture and preserve our island specialness for you, for us, for our children and our children's children to revel in for generations to come.

We hope by opening our doors through these special events you will join us in this long term investment in the future of our community. Please, join us.

Vashon Art Tour

Holiday ART TOUR 2015

December 5-6 & 12-13

10 AM - 4 PM

Almost 30 years ago, in Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, artists on Vashon Island opened their doors to the public for the first of many art studio tours. From primarily a potters’ show, this rural venue has grown over the years to include up to 100 Island artists. The tour spans two weekends twice each year. The Holiday Art Studio Tour is offered the first two weekends every December, the Spring Art Studio Tour during the first two weekends each May.

Visitors may view artwork in the form of paintings, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, glass, jewelry, photography, garden art and even more.

Many artists demonstrate their craft and all are ready to explain their processes at locations ranging from artists’ studios to Vashon’s historic buildings. A number of fine shops and galleries also feature the work of Island artists and craftspeople.

A peaceful, country getaway, Vashon Island lies only a short ferry ride from either Fauntleroy (West Seattle),
Point Defiance (Tacoma) or Southworth (Kitsap).

Ferry schedules can be found at www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries

Plan to stay the weekend at one of Vashon’s many B&Bs, sample the cuisine at our fine restaurants and…
expose yourself to ART!

PT Robinson Open House

ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE, POINT ROBINSON LIGHT STATION

SUNDAY, December 6th, 12-4pm

The Keepers of Point Robinson and the Vashon Park District invite you to our annual open house, on Sunday, 6 December, from noon to 4 PM.

Both sets of Keepers' Quarters will be open for your inspection, and for you to decide when will be YOUR stay with us.  Captain Joe, the President of the Keepers of Point Robinson, will be making the largest batch of his homemade chili he has ever made,  to add to the buffet.  This assortment of sweets and savories is prepared by the Ladies of the Light, and although the chili is full of meat, there will be enough of the other sort to please even the most avid vegetarian.

The Lighthouse Santa arrives at around 1 PM, the time a little loose, because he, like the rest of us, comes over on the ferry.  There will be live music of the season, and tours of the working lighthouse, always including a voyage to the top of the tower.  The Ship's Store will be open for your holiday shopping.

For this event, parking will be on the grass inside the swing gate.  If you bring a dog, or dogs, for a run, that is fine, but they cannot come into the houses or the lighthouse.

First Friday on Vashon

This Friday, the monthly Gallery Cruise promises a wealth of all kinds of art to gaze upon.  Most art galleries are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Living Bird: 100 Years of Listening to Nature

Vashon-Maury Island Audubon Society Presents

The Living Bird: 100 Years of Listening to Nature

Book signing and presentation by Gerrit Vyn, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Thursday, December 9th, 7 PM – 9 PM

At the Land Trust on Bank Road

Event is free and open to the public

Photographer, cinematographer, and sound recordist Gerrit Vyn travels around the world to document the lives of birds for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. A new book created for the Lab’s 100-year anniversary, The Living Bird: 100 Years of Listening to Nature, explores our joyful and complex relationship with birds. Gerrit’s images along with thoughtful and inspiring essays by writers including Barbara Kingsolver, Jared Diamond, and Lab Director John Fitzpatick, take readers on a visual and experiential journey revealing the life-changing role that birds can play in our understanding of the natural world. In his talk, Gerrit will illustrate the major themes covered in the book and share many of his powerful images and video recordings from the field.
